Usually yes — but rosacea is the condition most likely to look fine at consultation and flare 48 hours after you've treated it. It is a chronic inflammatory vascular condition, not sensitive skin, and the trigger list overlaps almost exactly with what happens in a treatment room: heat, steam, friction, alcohol-based products, fragrance, and physical exfoliation.
What UK insurers and training bodies generally expect:
- Never treat an active flare. Papules, pustules, burning, or an angry flush mean postpone. Working over inflamed skin is what turns a flare into weeks of visible damage.
- Drop the heat. No steam, no hot towels, no hot stones, no high-heat wax on the face. Warmth dilates the vessels that are already the problem.
- Skip physical exfoliation and strong actives. No scrubs, no microdermabrasion, no high-strength acids or retinoids on reactive skin. Gentle enzyme work is the usual ceiling.
- Wax the face with caution. Strip wax on rosacea-prone cheeks can lift compromised skin. Use low-temperature hot wax or thread instead, and never over broken or crusted areas.
- Rule out ocular rosacea before eye work. Roughly half of rosacea clients have eye involvement — gritty, red, watering eyes. Lash lifts, tints, and extensions need a GP-clear first.
- Check for topical or oral medication. Clients on azelaic acid, ivermectin, metronidazole or oral doxycycline may have photosensitised or thinned skin, which changes laser, IPL, and peel decisions.
The genuine nuance: IPL and vascular laser are recognised *treatments* for rosacea redness — but only in trained, appropriately insured hands, and never on a client currently on isotretinoin. If you are not specifically trained for it, "I don't treat rosacea with IPL" is a legitimate and defensible answer.
Record what you saw, the date, and the client's own account of their triggers before you start. Skin-condition detail is health data under UK GDPR Article 9, so it needs a secure client record and a lawful basis — not a note in the diary margin.
Every client, remembered — safely.
SAY-OS keeps each client's contraindications, allergies and history in one place, and flags them at booking — so the right call happens before they're in the chair.
