Short answer: yes. Vitiligo is an autoimmune loss of pigment, not an infection, and it is not a bar to most salon treatments. Two things change how you work: the skin has no natural UV protection, and trauma can trigger new patches.
The Koebner response. In active vitiligo, injury to the skin can seed a new depigmented patch weeks later. Treat anything that breaks or drags skin as higher risk — waxing, threading, microneedling, dermaplaning, medium-to-deep peels, aggressive extractions. Ask whether patches have appeared or spread in the last twelve months. Stable for a year or more is a very different conversation from spreading now.
Laser and IPL hair removal. Depigmented skin has no epidermal melanin, so burn risk from the skin itself is low — but the hair in those patches is usually white or grey, and the laser has nothing to target. It will not work. Electrolysis is the reliable route. Most device manufacturers also contraindicate active, unstable vitiligo, so check your own machine's protocol and your insurer's wording.
Sun and heat. Depigmented skin burns fast. Reinforce SPF50 aftercare, and never send a client to a sunbed to "even things out."
Medication. Many clients use topical steroids or tacrolimus, or attend hospital phototherapy. Steroids thin skin, so waxing lifts more easily; phototherapy leaves skin photosensitive for days. Ask what they are using and where.
Spray tan and camouflage are usually fine and often wanted — patch test, and warn that uptake will differ across patches.
Vitiligo can meet the Equality Act 2010 definition of disability. Refusing a client on appearance alone is a discrimination risk. Assess the skin in front of you, record what you asked, and offer an alternative rather than a flat no.
